Mortality

Mortality throughout the production cycle is a cause of serious financial loss for many farms. Therefore its prevention is a priority.

In early life, whilst the animal's own immune system is still developing, it relies on passive immunity transferred from its parent either via colostrum or the yolk sac. In order to maximise the transfer of the passive immunity and thus minimise early mortality, the provision of optimum nutrition to the parent stock is essential. This is achieved by supplying quality balanced diets and protecting the nutrients contained within them.

An important factor is the provision of adequate levels of vitamins, trace elements and minerals within the diet. Optivite has extensive experience in this field for all species of livestock and produces Vitamin Mineral Supplements for incorporation either in the feed mill or for on-farm use.

Microbial challenges from within the animal's environment can cause various adverse effects including digestive disorders and infections that in turn may result in death. The two most common bacterial challenges are Salmonella and E. Coli. When incorporated into diets, Optivite's antibacterial products Salgard and Genex, protect feed against these harmful bacteria.

Feed and feed ingredients can be protected against mould contamination with Moldgard.

Mycotoxins can cause various adverse effects such as digestive and reproductive disorders and often lead to fatalities. Adding Mycobond can help solve this problem.

The addition of the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are known to have positive benefits in this area. Our own extensive trial work using Optomega omega-3 fatty acid supplement in both breeding and growing species has clearly shown the benefit of including Optomega in the diet.
