Feed Preservation - Moulds & Yeasts

All animal feedstuffs are invariably contaminated with moulds. Even before harvesting, plants are invaded by field fungi, however these are less dangerous than the storage fungi that develop on grains after harvesting. These organisms can survive for very long periods, even in unfavourable conditions, by producing microscopic spores in order to perpetuate the species. All that is needed for them to proliferate again is warmth and moisture. Mould spores are very hardy and difficult to kill. Even the processes involved in the production of animal feed do not generate enough heat to destroy them.

Modern handling equipment and financial pressures on feed ingredient suppliers often lead to increased mechanical damage and compromises in post-harvest care. For these reasons mould contamination in feed ingredients is increasing.

Moulds reduce acceptability and saleable value. Nutrients are lost and the feeding value is considerably reduced. Increased surface moisture, as a result of mould growth, encourages other moulds, yeasts and mites to become established.

A product of Optivite's long history of feed preservation, Moldgard will help prevent serious mould growth. It is always preferable to apply the product as soon as possible after harvest, certainly before storage, to minimise future problems. Alternatively Moldgard can be added it at the feed mill when this is the first point of control.

Often, mould control measures are taken too late. Moulds may have already secreted their mycotoxins. These have disastrous direct effects on livestock (reduced performance, reproductive failure, illness and even death). In such circumstances treat the feed with Optivite's mycotoxin binder, Mycobond.

Where the mould-mycotoxin status is not known, use Zetox, combining the essential benefits of both Moldgard and Mycobond for effective risk management.
