Optomega for Poultry

Modern poultry diets are often deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and contain a high proportion of omega-6s resulting in a sub-optimal ratio of these important dietary constituents. The main reason for this is an increasing reliance on vegetable fats for energy. The addition of the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are known to have positive benefits in all aspects of modern poultry production. Our own extensive trial work using Optomega in both laying and growing birds has clearly shown the benefit of including Optomega in the diet.

Laying hens

Including Optomega in the hen’s diet can increase the omega-3 level of the egg. This provides another source of omega-3 fatty acids for people who wish to increase their intake of these vital nutrients.

  • EPA level increased four times
  • DHA level increased upto 3.5 times
  • No taint problems

Current research is underway investigating potential beneficial effects on skeletal and egg shell quality during lay.

Broilers

As well as the known benefits to breeding and young birds research has highlighted potential benefits in relation to bone development. Optivite has taken part in a 3-year Government backed LINK project at the Roslin Institute and found that Optomega gave the following major benefits

  • Improved weight gain
  • Improved FCR
  • Increased tibia breaking strength
  • Increased tibia stiffness
  • Increased tibia ash and mineral content
  • Increased tibia density
  • Increased tibia cross section
  • Increased bone and marrow area
