Optomega for Ruminants
Dairy Cows
Modern dairy diets are often deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and contain a high proportion of omega-6s resulting in a sub-optimal ratio of these important dietary constituents. The main reason for this is the increased reliance on cereals with a corresponding reduction in grass forage a traditional omega-3 source. The addition of the essential omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are known to have positive benefits in dairy cows, particularly on fertility. Our own extensive trial work using Optomega in dairy cows has clearly shown the benefit of including Optomega in the diet. Trials around the world have shown the following benefits:-
- Improved conception rates
- Reduction in days to first service
- Reduction in calving to conception period
- Reduced calving interval
- Reduced services per conception
- Improved milk yield
Beef
Modern beef production has changed in a similar way to that of the dairy cow and omega-3s are often limiting. Recent trial work in beef animals has shown the following benefits:-
- Increased EPA level in meat
- Increased DHA level in meat
- Improved omega-3 to omega-6 ratio in meat
Sheep
Today’s highly prolific breeds often lead to increased losses at lambing due to the high number of multiple births. Research work (Capper et al 2002 and CSIRO) has shown the following benefits of feeding omega-3 fatty acids:-
- Reduced time taken for lamb to stand after birth
- Reduced time taken to suckle
- Improved omega-3 content of meat
