Optomega – omega-3 fatty acid supplement
Fats are made up of fatty acids of varying chain length and saturation. One particular class of these are the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids (principally DHA and EPA) are essential nutrients, not normally produced by animals in any significant quantity. The inherent balance of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids in most animal feeds is far from ideal.
The addition of omega-3 fatty acids to animal feeds helps to redress this balance returning the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio to a more ideal level. Following an intensive R&D program, Optivite has developed an easy, convenient, stable and safe way of improving this ratio – the innovative Optomega range.
Increasing omega-3 intakes in livestock:
- enhances fertility
- enhances sperm count
- enhances viability of young
- improves skin condition
- improves growth rate
- improves feed conversion
- increases omega-3 content of meat and eggs
The Optomega range benefits all farm livestock. The products are designed around unique omega-3 sources selected for their consistency, quality and bio-efficacy. Optomega products are strictly quality controlled, fully traceable and specifically processed to remove anti-nutritional factors and avoid potential contamination. When incorporated into feed Optomega provides optimal levels of DHA/EPA to balance the levels of omega-6 fatty acids from vegetable sources.
Positive financial benefits from using Optomega products are many. For example, improvements in conception rate in dairy cows have been demonstrated, worth approx. 140 euros per cow i.e. a return of over 10:1. In laying hens, eggs enriched with omega-3s can command a significant premium over standard eggs. In growing poultry, improvements in bone strength and growth rates have been demonstrated. In breeding pigs, improved sperm quality and increased pigs per sow per year have been demonstrated. In growing pigs, alteration of the fatty acid profile in meat has been demonstrated.
