Enzymes - Wheatzyme

Wheatzyme is a high specification enzyme combination designed to enhance the digestibility of wheat and barley based diets. Similarly, feeds high in triticale and rye can benefit from the addition of Wheatzyme.

The use of these cereals in feeds for monogastrics can cause some side effects due to the presence of non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs), especially beta-glucans and arabinoxylans. These branched chain polymers of sugar molecules cannot be broken down as the animal does not itself produce the appropriate enzymes.

The results of this are:

  1. The sugars contained in the NSPs are not available to the animal for energy.
  2. Other nutrients such as proteins are trapped.
  3. The presence of NSPs increase the viscosity of the gut contents, making it more difficult for other digestive enzymes to work and slowing the rate of passage of nutrients to the gut wall for absorption.

By supplementing the feed with the correct combination of enzyme activities it is possible to break down the polymers, reducing gut viscosity and releasing glucose and amino acids. These additional nutrients then result in improved performance. Alternatively the improvements in nutrient digestibility can be incorporated into the feed formulation, with a consequent reduction in feed cost. The payback resulting from the use of Wheatzyme can be up to 5:1 depending on feed material prices.

Wheatzyme is available in a convenient powder form, suitable for most situations. Due to the normal heat sensitivity of enzymes, where the feed production process involves significant heat, it is often advisable to use Wheatzyme in liquid form, to spray onto the feed after the pelleting and cooling stage
